Student-designed video game demoed by esports team

Humber’s game programming 3D animation programs developed two video games that were demoed by the school’s Esports team Thursday afternoon.

Over the semester, the two programs collaborated to design two separate titles: Time Keepers of the Sea and Mortithon.

Time Keepers of the Sea is described as being a “tower defence” style game, while Mortithon has been described as a “death run” by its developers, where players must avoid obstacles in a course to complete levels.

Both were played live in front of Humber students gathered in the E Building Lecture Theatre.

Jullian Nguyen, project lead for Time Keepers of the Sea, said she was excited and anxious to see their work being played by a third party.

“I’m a bit nervous because we can’t guide the players like we normally would, but hopefully they’ll be able to read the game well and function it with the manual that’s inside,” she said.

The game’s programmer lead, Rut Patel, shares a similar sentiment.

“There are a lot of controls in the game and without the developer explaining, it might be confusing,” he said, “But I’m really excited to have it played in a common area with this many people.”

The project lead for Mortithon, Fiona Johnson, said both games have been entered into the Level Up Showcase 2024, which takes place Friday afternoon.

Level Up Showcase is an event where students from various schools enter their titles to compete against each other for awards based on the quality of their game.

Johnson said she hopes the work of her and her peers pays off at the showcase.

“We’ve put so much effort into it, so I’m feeling burnt out slightly and I’d like to win tomorrow, but there’s going to be like 20 different schools entering games so we’ll see,” she said.

Mohid Ali, a member of the Valorent Varsity team for Humber Esports, had the chance to test run both games.

“I really liked both, but Mortithon stood out to me,” he said, “I think it was fun, interactive and I like the design of death run games so it was really cool.”

“With Mortithon, I think they really have a chance of winning tomorrow,” Ali said.

Level Up Showcase 2024 is set to take place Friday afternoon at the Westin Harbour Castle from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
