Humber gave students a chance to network with alumni in a recent mix-and-mingle event.

Aliea Lyub, a former Humber College student and is currently a registration assistant at the College of Registered Psychotherapists, said the event is a good opportunity to link up with students and offer them advice.

“I think coming to this event is a great opportunity for alumni to connect with current students, you’re able to give them tips and tricks of how to be successful while studying on campus, as well as working different jobs,” she said.

Lyub graduated from the Bachelor’s of Commerce in Health Care Management program and worked with student wellness and accessibility before working where she does now.

“My experience at Humber was really good,” Lyub said. “I really enjoyed my classes and the professors and the friends that I made.”

“The thing that I remember most about Humber was, you know, the support that you have there are amazing colleagues and supervisors that support you throughout your time,” she said.

Naomi Fernandes, the student life facilitator at Humber and one of the main organizers of the April 3. Event held in the Concourse, said holding events like this is important because they allow new students to learn more about Humber and the programs and events that take place at Humber.

“This event is great for students to get to know more about Humber campus, what we do,” she said. “We have many events on campus, but this is something that’s unique, where they actually have to engage with other students, other people from the department, or alumni, and get to really find Humber as a home for them.”

Fernandes said the Alumni were invited to come and that this event provided opportunities for them to network as well as preparing them if they want to come back.

“All these people have graduated and they have not met our team in a while, so it’s a great opportunity for them to do so, meet new students if they are thinking of coming back to Humber and are looking for some programs, so they can mix and mingle with students who are in that program,” she said.

Sama Jesow is a registered nurse who is an alumna of the Bachelor of Nursing program, said the event brought back memories.

“It’s great coming back to Humber,” she said. “I used to work as a Senior Peer Mentor at First Year Experience, so I was able to see my former co-workers today.

“And I had a great experience at Humber,” Jesow said. “I got to participate in the social events and I spent four years here, so it’s definitely very, really nostalgic for me to be back.”

Jesow said she remembers her time as a first-year student, figuring things out in an unfamiliar school.

“I remember just being a new student and being really nervous, just getting the hang of things,” she said. “I was also impacted by the pandemic, too, so it was really challenging.”

“But I think that Humber has a lot of resources for the students here which is amazing and I was able to take advantage of that so I had a great experience at Humber,” Jesow said.

She said some advice she’d give to first-year students is to focus on school and to manage their time wisely with things like study routines and double-checking dates.
