Humber hosts glow-in-the-dark event to promote fitness

The lights were out, but there was no danger of participants not seeing each other during these fitness classes.

Humber North Recreation conducted fitness activities like Kangoo Boots bouncing, dodge ball, and basketball games under black lights in North Gym B.

Everyone who attended were given neon T-shirts, glowsticks, and glow-in-the-dark markers.

“It’s unique how they have the ball glow, the rim glow, and all the players, you can only see their shirts,” AJ Vanraaij said. He took part in dodge ball and basketball games, and says it was great to meet other students.

“It kind of gets you a chance to meet new people in a creative fun way that you don’t see too often,” he said.

Joe Nicola says he also met friends but has some advice for those who are competitive.

“You make friends with the people who are on your team, so choose wisely.”

Milena Gucciardi, a media student and North recreation employee, said this event combines recreation sports and student engagement.

“It’s for a chance for students to engage with their community and hopefully make new friends,” she said.

She hopes students can get some joy from playing sports for fun during a stressful semester.

“It’s not competitive like the varsity sports we have here. This is recreation,” she said.

For next year, Vanraaij and Gucciardi hope for a bigger turnout and more sports like soccer.

“It’s still relatively new, but hopefully, it’ll be like something big like Hawk Fest or winter festival, something we’ve been doing for a while,” Gucciardi said.
