The Humber Hawks women’s volleyball team has started the new year adding two more wins to their already perfect season against the Niagra Knights and the Fanshawe Falcons.

In Sunday afternoon’s match-up against the Falcons, the Humber Hawks continued to show their dominance on both sides of the ball with a three-set sweep, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19.

Although they came into the game as the only undefeated team in the conference, they knew it was going to be tough playing against a young, high energy, Falcon team but the Hawks were prepared for anything.

Left-side hitter Cassidy Andrews said the message before the game was to use this game as an opportunity to get better in their skills and focus on their side of the net and focus on what they came here to do.

And that’s exactly what they did.

“I thought we did a good job of playing at our level and making sure that we took care of what we need to take care of on our side and we didn’t let the energy from the Falcons affect our play,” she said.

“We followed our game plan and did what we were supposed to do.”

Andrews finished the game with five kills and three digs.

Falcons head coach Montana Ridout said that this Humber team is playing a very clean game of volleyball.

“Keeping other teams under pressure, whether that’s offensively or defensively, they just do a great job of playing their game and playing a very clean and smart game of volleyball and putting the pressure on the other team,” she said.

The Falcons team is in the middle of a long-term process of building a winning team so Ridout wasn’t expecting a win but using it as a learning opportunity against a strong team.

“Our game plan going into the match yesterday was mostly just internally focused, we have some things that we’re trying to work through some different systems and processes,” she said.

“It was really just focusing on ourselves and doing the things that we were trying to implement.”

With five games remaining, the team has the opportunity to do the unthinkable, going a perfect 18-0.

Humber head coach Chris Wilkins believes they have the talent to do so but isn’t looking too far ahead.

“In years past we’ve had teams that were our middle hitters were strong and maybe our left sides weren’t as strong, but this year our outside hitters and our middles are strong. We have a good mix of rookies and vets,” he said.

“We want to win every game, but for us, it’s a matter of just making sure that we’re improving and we’re getting stronger. And so then when that time comes around, we’re we’re firing on all cylinders.
