The TTC has seen unprecedented rates of violence over the past year.

The spike of violence on the TTC has many Toronto residents feeling reluctant to use the TTC.

According to a recent poll by Ipsos, 44 per cent of Torontonians feel unsafe using transit on their own. In comparison, only 27 per cent of all Canadians feel unsafe using transit.

The TTC has attempted to combat violence on the transit system by implementing increased police presence in late January but the initiative ended by mid-March due to a lack of funding in the police budget to afford the plan.

After the lift of the overtime deployment, another tragic murder occurred on TTC property when 16-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes was stabbed and murdered at Keele Station in a random attack on March 25, 2023.

Toronto Star columnist Rob Salem posted on his social media Sunday that he was sucker punched while getting off a subway car.
