As semesters come to a close, The Humber community are giving their insight on what to expect for upcoming first year students.

Making the transition from high school to college can be challenging, so Humber News had the chance to interview three students and one faculty member for advice.

Calum Kokkinos who is a first year student in the sports management program spoke with Humber News about what he would suggest to new students.

“My advice for first year students would be, stay organized and give yourself at least a week to prepare for your exams,” he said.

Students Humber News spoke with said staying organized especially when it comes to school can make your life easier and allow you to be more productive especially in a very busy semester.

Matthew Vieira, who is studying Sports Management at Humber and is also in his first year, had these quick tips to start post-secondary.

“My advice for first year students at Humber is to respect your teachers, always stay ahead of your homework and make sure you’re prepared,” he said.

Lara King, who is the program coordinator for the journalism program at Humber had some important information to share.

“Find out what goes on around here, don’t just come to class and then get back into your car and head home,” she said.

Humber has an assortment of after class activities and clubs for all students attending so staying after class might not be the worst idea.

“Come in, learn about the clubs, go and see what people are doing like battle of the bands, see some jazz events, watch some games,” King said.

At Humber, there are many resources at your disposal so try to make the best out of it, King said.

“Take advantage of the stuff that you have paid for.”

Mauro Armenio, who is part of the sports management program and is about to finish his second semester, talked about the importance of time and friendship.

“My advice for first year students would be to attend class on time, maybe even five minutes earlier and get to know as many people as you can,” he said.
