As you prepare for college, Humber students share some advice

Apr 14, 2023 | JRNL219 - 2023

Students and faculty were asked about what advice they would give to students coming to Humber in the Summer 2023 and Fall 2023 semesters, so they can help ease into a successful college student career.

Simon Borer, a web design teacher at Humber College, said for new students to always ask themselves, “What is the least I can do?”

“Keep tabs on your obligations, do the bare minimum, get a good night’s sleep, and then see if you have time to turn your ‘good enough’ work into something amazing. But you’ll always pass your courses, and get another chance to do something great,” Borer said.

As a student it’s your job to pass your classes, but also that your mental health is very important, he said, adding that a student may be very passionate about some classes and want to be a grade-A student in them, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of your other courses.

Students that Humber News spoke with echoed Borer’s advice as well.

“I would tell them to focus on your schoolwork first and work hard but still maintain a good social life with all the amazing people here,” Haley McKinnon, a student in the Pre-Health Sciences program, said.

According to Haley, the social life you build at Humber is one of the most important parts of the college experience.

Ivan Tovar, a business student at the University of Guelph-Humber, said to make sure you go to class and that you listen to your professors.

“Sometimes the teachers drop gems that may be used in future grading.”

Another business student at Guelph-Humber, Jamal Casco Valverde, said he would recommend not sweeping everything under the rug and putting things off until exams.

“I would give this advice because that’s what I tend to follow and I’ve been decently successful in my first year so far.”

In all of the advice given by everyone, there are two very clear themes.

Do your work, but make sure you keep care of yourself.

If you manage to do both of those then you’ll be fine right here at Humber College.
