IGNITE held its 2023 Annual General Meeting March 29 by introducing the team that will run Humber’s student government next year.

Board of Directors chair Jessica Urzua Cordon-Carrera Valle started the meeting by introducing the winners of the 2023-24 IGNITE Election for Humber’s North, Lakeshore, and Guelph-Humber campuses.

“I’d like to present your elected 2023-2024 Board of Directors,” said Cordon-Carrera.

Through an online poll, students in attendance ratified the newly elected Board of Directors. These new members will take office starting May 1st.

Discussion then turned to proposed bylaw changes regarding IGNITE’s non-profit governance structure. The changes Students in the AGM agreed to amend these bylaws.

Next on the agenda was the financial report of the student council. The report detailed the income and expenditure of the council over the past year and was presented by Tara DeFrancesco, Director, Finance & Administration at IGNITE.

The budget revealed that there are four essential categories that IGNITE must generate a specific amount of revenue for: Career Success, Well-Being & Financial Security, Membership, and Advocacy/Leadership

“IGNITE has four mandatory fees, which are calculated by taking the fee category rates and multiplying them by 100 per cent of projected enrolment provided by Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber,” DeFrancesco said.

The total revenue for these four categories comes out to $4,654,000.

IGNITE said they would continue to use these funds to improve student services like the Soup Bar, Sleep Lounge, and Free Tax Clinic.

Also presented at the meeting was IGNITE’s 2022-2023 impact report, which detailed their reach and impact on campus.

Highlights included 926 students receiving IGNITE bursaries, Black Excellence, Pride and Indigenous scholarships, and more.

The full impact report is scheduled to release sometime in April.
