The GTA was bracing to be hit Wednesday for a major snow storm that has been brewing for a few days, and is expected to stay until early Friday.

As of 3 p.m. most of the GTA was expecting a snowstorm that could cause a lot of inconvenience to commuters.

Environment Canada warned of heavy snow fall along with ice pellets. In a special weather statement, it prediced that by Friday we will be faced with up to 15 centimeters of snow.

“We’ve had various special weather statements issued for a few days now,” Geoff Coulson, Meteorologist for Environment Canada said.

“As the storm got closer we got a better sense of which areas will be affected. Special weather statements turned into winter storm warnings.”

The areas which will be affected span across the GTA from Toronto, Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara peninsula. This storm is expected to take a break early Thursday morning, just to resurface again later in the day.

“It actually looks like two impulses with this storm. Thursday midday there’s a possibility of freezing drizzles and ice pellets and snowfall. But it should finally taper on Friday morning.”

Coulson also warned that the commute home for many will be slowed significantly.

“As the freezing rain gets going this evening and in the over night hours, the roads will be very icy. So driving conditions may get very slippery.”

Students who are driving express concern for their Thursday morning commute.

“I’ve heard about the storm all weekend. I drive so I’m hoping there won’t be any black ice so I don’t swerve off the road. If it’s as bad as the warning says, I’m looking at a three hour commute,” Yianni Troupis, a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology student said.

Many were not surprised at all at this snowy development and said they were prepared for a longer commute.

“This happens every year,” Karlo Jusic, electrical engineering student said. “I have a 30 minute commute that might take longer but I’m used to it.”

Winso Tuke, a Computer Engineering student, had similar thoughts.

“I don’t know what the outcome of this storm is going to be, I’m pretty used to these kinds of warnings but I think it’s just going to get worse and worse.”

Some students were even a little disappointed that the spring-like weather from last week is completely gone.

“I guess snow is kind of expected in February, but I was seriously ready for spring. It’s crazy how one week it’s warm and now it’s back to snow storms,” Roanne Pamugas, a Practical Nursing student said.

As of now, Humber College has not put out any updates on class schedules during this winter storm, however students only need to push through to the end of the week and will be rewarded with a relaxing break from school as reading week is only a snow storm away.
