Across Toronto and the GTA, residents are taking to the streets to vote on who will be their next mayor or city councillor.

Polls opened across the city and the GTA at 10 a.m. and they’ll close at 8 p.m. tonight. Voters also had the chance to vote online ahead of election day.

The big races to follow include the Toronto mayoral race — featuring 32 candidates — but is considered to be a race between the top two contenders, incumbent John Tory and opponent Gil Peñalosa.

In Brampton, Patrick Brown, who was disqualified from the federal Conservative leadership race in the summer, is running for re-election as mayor.

Humber News will be covering mayoral races in Toronto and Brampton, as well as city council races in Wards 1, 3, and 11.

Also in Brampton, and less than 24 hours before Election Day, 150 staff members resigned en masse.

Another issue could be, the election falling on Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. It poses possible questions about voter turnout in places like Brampton and Mississauga with their large Indo Canadian populations.

Polling stations in Vaughan and Hamilton until 9 p.m. Twelve polling stations in Toronto have been extended up to 30 minutes after the stations encountered technical issues.

In Parkdale, voters are being told that Catholic school board ballots are unavailable.
