Presto fares to be less costly for some post-secondary students

For students who use GO Transit in addition to a city bus to get to Humber, their commutes are about to get cheaper.

Presto fares for teenagers and post-secondary students will be discounted by 40 per cent off of the full adult fare starting March 14.

“I’m really happy,” said Jhennelle Santiago, a Nursing student who was waiting for a bus on Thursday, “’cause money is tight and we’re students.”

The discount only applies to GO Transit and UP Express, and will be eligible to all full-time students, regardless of their age.

It can be complicated and expensive to travel to campus several times per week, depending on where students are coming from.

The Co-Fare Discount

Commuters used to pay twice in order to travel with multiple transit systems.

Now that’s also changing on March 14.

Local transit fare will be free if you’re using GO Transit and local transit agencies, such as; Durham Region, Milton, Grand River, Guelph, Oakville, MiWay, Brampton, Hamilton Street, Burlington, Bradford West Gwillimbury, York Region, and Barrie.

This discount will also be automatically applied to your Presto card when using any of the local transit agencies and transferring to or from GO.

The discount does not apply to TTC fares, but can help Humber students who rely on other regional transit systems – such as MiWay, Durham Region Transit, and Brampton Transit.

“I think it’ll help a lot with a lot of people,” Kidus Tewodros, a sustainability and building technology student said, “especially [those] in financial situations and stuff like that. I think it’ll be a great change.”

Getting to North campus can cost $9.75 if are travelling from Sheridan College then transferring to MiWay at Square One. With the discount, students will be reimbursed the MiWay fare, a savings of about $3.10.
