Finch West LRT construction causing headaches for Humber commuters

The Finch West LRT construction is frustrating pedestrians heading to Humber College.

Zhiyi Yao, a game programming student, finds it difficult to walk to Humber with the road and sidewalk restrictions in place along Humber College Boulevard.

“The sidewalk closure is really annoying,” he said.

“I understand the need for safety but sometimes it gets excessive.”

The LRT is an 11km transit line that will run from Finch West station to Humber College when it opens in 2023.

This month crews started to excavate the future station entrance at the intersection of Humber College Boulevard and Highway 27.

Humber College sent out an announcement providing an update on the construction and what students and staff can expect, as well as traffic, pedestrian, and transit details.

Matt Llewellyn, a spokesperson for Metrolinx, said construction is coming along well and that once it’s completed it will provide students heading to Humber a fast and reliable means of transportation.

“Trains will run every five to seven minutes during peak hours,” he said.

“It may be hard for residents to see the potential based on all the interruptions, but this will be a transit system that offers more choices to travel on their own schedule.”

Alana Enahoro, a graphic design student, takes the bus to and from Humber and said travelling gets unbearable when there’s heavy traffic.

“Sometimes the bus takes longer when I have a class in the morning,” she said.

“I hope the construction gets more bearable as they continue. I’m excited about the new train, so I suppose I’ll have to tough it out.”

Llewellyn said people can check out Metrolinx’s website for up-to-date information about the project.
