Toronto celebrates Black History Month with unique arts and events

Several TTC buses and GO Transit will be wrapped with art honouring historic Black Canadians for Black History next week.

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is partnering up with StreetART Toronto to shine a light on the work of Black artists. Metrolinx unveiled a bus honouring Canada’s First Lady of Blues Salome Bey.

Toronto commuters can see this artwork while taking the bus and trains to work throughout February. Those are some of the unique ways that Black History Month is being celebrated.

Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) is one of many Black organizations that is contributing into recognizing and helping Black businesses.

“We offer the chance to participate in the economic development of the black community,” Yvonne Richards, Event and Facilities Manager of CBCC told Humber News.

Some of the events that the CBCC is doing are The Black Business Entrepreneur Support Program which will be held on Feb. 17

“People that are thinking of started their business could actually start their business or if you already have a business, how do you grow your business,”

“We have advisers and have people coming in CIBC having black opportunity funds that are helping with the financials.” she said.

Making Black Media is another event that they’re hosting held on Feb. 24 is Black entrepreneurs and representation and Black business creating their own stories.

Their two other events are Step Up Your eCommerce and Footprint Across Canada both being held on Feb. 8 ad 24.

Richards said that registration for the individuals to work to apply and learn more about these events.

“There will be links that will be sent later on for people to register and to attend these events, or if they want training they go through a training program involved on campus with any other organization but we could send it a link as well,”

The theme for this year for Black History Month is “February and Forever” a call for Black History Month to be celebrated today and everyday recognizing the contributions that Black Canadians make to Canada.
