The University of Toronto’s Sexual Education Centre (SEC) will be taking a hands-on approach to sexual education this year.
The SEC is hosting its annual Sexual Awareness Week event on Jan. 21 at the Oasis Aqua Lounge.
The venue serves as a sex-club where intercourse is allowed anywhere but the hot tub.
“We have to test the hot tub every hour,” Jana Matthews, Oasis owner, told Humber News.
Some online sources are dubbing the event as an orgy, but SEC representatives assure the public it is not.
“Our executive director made it very clear that this is not an orgy, we’re not funding an orgy,” Dylan Tower, external education and outreach coordinator, told the Toronto Star. “It is a safe and cheaper way to introduce curious students to the sex club scene in Toronto.”
Humber Students’ Federation President, Bhalinder Bedi, said he was shocked when he heard about the event.
“It is getting the message across and the conversation is occurring,” said Bedi. “It challenges the norm of how we would typically teach sexual education.”
The event took place last year and spawned a weekly event at Oasis.
“They approached us to rent the place,” Matthews said.
Now the club holds Student Mondays once a month, where students under 35 years of age may partake in the festivities, as long as they provide a student ID.
“We try to keep it for the students,” said Matthews. “If they want to relax after class, enjoy the spa facility, or they really want to have sex.”
The establishment does promote using protection to participants even though they cannot force it upon club-goers.
