When Humber’s annual student art show opens next week, it will feature a record number of student submissions.

“We want to bring the art community together and acknowledge that we have so many great artists at Humber,” public relations student Nicole Sherwin said.

Sherwin is the chair of this year’s edition, titled ‘Cirque Du Humber,’ which opens Monday afternoon at the G Commons building on Humber’s Lakeshore campus.

Humber has hosted a student art show for more than 30 years.

The 358 submissions represent categories from digital art to drawings and paintings to colour and monochromatic photography.

The top entries in each category will be judged by members of the local art community.

“The art show’s purpose is to give Humber students the experience of submitting to and being involved in an art contest, even more so for emerging artists who want to get their work out there to a larger audience and have their work recognized by their peers and the art community,” Sherwin said.

Additionally, one winner from each category will be selected for the ‘Juror’s pick’ and will go on to represent Humber at the League for Innovation’s international competition with even more cash prizes at stake.

The League for Innovation is an international organization for community colleges which organizes events, competitions and conferences. Humber is the only Canadian institution taking part in its international art competition.

“It’s also something to give students an outside world experience,” Sherwin said.

“It looks great on the student’s resume, and of course it is a huge accomplishment in itself for their work to be critically acclaimed, and I know of students from Humber who have won the competition in the past,” Sherwin added.

Last year saw the painting “Indian Rural Women’ by Global Business Management student Unnati Mundegesara Krishnamurthy represent Humber at last year’s League competition.
