Humber College’s CICE student council held a Valentine’s Day fundraiser Tuesday, selling homemade bracelets and raffle tickets.

Community integration through co-operative education (CICE) is a certificate program at Humber’s north campus that provides students with intellectual disabilities diverse opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and experience regular college life.

The event was planned only a week ago and members of the council Keon Luc and Kezlin Gabriel said were glad they pulled it off.

“I hope the event will help us, to keep us happy and positive. I think we did a pretty good job,” said Luc.

People all over campus came to the L building to donate and show their support by purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win various items like LED lights, controllers, and teddy bears.

“We also have handmade bracelets, which took half of the student council to make,” said student Khushbu Bedi proudly while showing off the colourful beads attached with strings and straws.

Photos booths with positive affirmations on the frame were also set up for donors to click pictures and share the event with others. The students said they put ideas on the white board, voted on various decisions and assigned each other roles according to their interests.

Gabriel said the event helped them get to know their classmates better, taught them money management, and created a collaborative environment.

“The event is also a social experience and part of it is to connect with the college community,” said Facilitator Melanie Savoia.

All money raised will go toward an excursion the student council is planning for the summer, such as watching a movie or going bowling together.

The students are planning a similar event for St. Patrick’s Day.
