Toronto medics offer cool tips as city faces heat spike

It’s a hot day in Toronto and health officials are warning people to stay hydrated and as cool as possible.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a heat warning for the city with maximum temperatures that will reach the low 30s again today. It said little relief is expected Tuesday night as temperatures dip to the low 20s.

Toronto temperatures are set to reach a high of 32 C but it will feel much warmer, with a humidex of 36 C.

“Cooler air is expected to arrive on Wednesday,” Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

The weather service warns that hot and humid air “can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category.”

The air quality for Toronto was set to five, which provides a moderate risk to people with respiratory issues.

Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said Wednesday’s temperature in the city has beat the previous record high of 31.1 C from 78 years ago.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The city issued a special weather statement released on Sunday for most of southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area warned of extensive heat conditions that would be making its way this week.

Toronto Paramedic Services is advising people to stay indoors if there is no need for travel.

Medics spokesperson Kim McKinnon said people should make plans before travelling in the heat. She said people should also bring extra water with them if travelling to stay hydrated, take breaks in shady areas, always use sunscreen, and don’t stay outside longer than necessary.

Toronto does offer places where people can go to cool off, such as libraries and centres located around the city where people are welcome to cool off, McKinnon said.
