It’s been a couple of weeks since Humber College cancelled all on-campus classes to support Canada in physical distancing protocols. Since then, the Humber community has been at home, united in the fight against COVID -19.

Humber College has started a #HumberAtHome series so the community can continue to share experiences together. Filled with inspiring ideas and motivational quotes, the #HumberAtHome series keeps the us all connected.

Share your own at home experiences by sending photos, videos and stories to bethany.sharpe@humber.ca.

As for this week’s Quarantine Tips with Harmony, lets get started.

Yoga with Kellie Elliot

If you’re one of Humber College’s yoga enthusiasts, then you probably have seen Kellie Elliot around the Yoga Studio. Kellie who is a Yoga Instructor at Humber, is hosting live yoga classes on her youtube channel KellieBom Yoga.

Kellie welcomes beginners and novices to her classes and says she offers many options so yogis of all levels can find their flow.

Tune in Fridays at 9 p.m., and Sundays at 10 a.m. to talk about what is going on in the world. Kellie’s classes are a great opportunity to network with like-minded individuals.

She said everyone can use yoga to help understand how to use breathing to allow the mind and body process present circumstances.

Daily Smoothies

It is important to ensure we are eating well as we cope with the mental stresses of social distancing

Though it’s very easy to reach for that bag of potato chips we bought for our quarantine, doctors suggest a nutritious diet can support mental health. Smoothies are a delicious and easy way to get a large dose of nutrients in one go and can even help keep you energized throughout the day.

It takes less than 10 minutes, but can positively impact your entire day. With smoothies, you can honestly add any fruit and vegetables you like. If you’re a smoothie novice, here is a simple recipe that you can easily modify according to any allergies or dietary restrictions.

  1. A hand full of spinach
  2. Six strawberries
  3. 1/2  banana
  4. Three inches of cucumber
  5. A small piece of ginger
  6. Six whole walnuts (skip if you’re allergic)
  7. a splash of orange juice
  8. Two spoons of Greek yogurt. (If you have dairy allergies or dietary restrictions, replace with a soy protein supplement, or use a soy or nut based milk instead).

Spring Cleaning

April showers are great! They clean the winter off of our streets, and then like magic, flowers start growing and trees start blossoming again! As we will probably be indoors a little longer, take the opportunity to clean your space to make room for your own metaphoric blossoming.

Go through old paperwork, make a pile of clothing, books, and non perishable food items to donate. Sweep behind the couch that is up against the wall, and maybe even buy a plant or succulent to brighten up your space. Removing dust and items you no longer use can give your home a fresh feel and adding plants creates extra oxygen in the air.

If you’re feeling stagnant, some spring cleaning can help you maintain a positive attitude as you look forward to the warm sunny days to come.

As time goes on social distancing can get harder, and know that you are not alone. If you need someone to talk to please reach out to Humber College’s Mental Health Support for Students at Good2Talk or TAOConnect.

Until next week Humber, let’s keep making a difference!
