A research group in Guelph, Ont., released the names of 78 Canadian female murder victims identified through media reports in the first half of 2018, a dozen that are Indigenous women.
The Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability issued the list of victims this week in an effort to bring national focus to the issue of femicide in Canada, the group said in a statement.
“A key objective of the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability is to bring a visible, national focus on femicide in this country,” they said. “One way of doing so is to be sure that femicide victims are not forgotten by naming these women and girls with the purpose of remembering them.”
Murdered Indigenous women were identified in order to highlight “the high risks faced by Indigenous women and girls and the ongoing national inquiry into this situation,” the group said. It noted an Indigenous woman or girl who is a victim of femicide is not always identified as such in the media.
