Commuters from across the Greater Toronto Area were able to ride the new Toronto-York Spadina subway extension to work and school starting this week.

Line 1 now has six new subway stops including York University, Pioneer Village and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. According to the TTC, the new stops allow riders to get from Vaughan to Union station in about 42 minutes.

For many York, Seneca and Schulich students the York University station makes for traveling to the campuses a lot easier.

Parking lots at some of the new stations are also beneficial for commuters. Finch West station has 347 spaces, Pioneer Village has 1,881 spaces and Highway 407 has 583 spaces.

Transportation officials estimate the extension could possibly see 36 million extra transit trips and eliminate approximately 30 million car trips in the GTA.

The Toronto-York Spadina subway extension officially opened Sunday, and to commemorate this the TTC offered free transit for the city.
