October is adopt a shelter dog month.
The Toronto Humane Society has called on people to consider adopting a dog rather than buying from a pet store or a breeder.
About 60 dogs come through the Humane Society every month that are in need of finding a new home.
The Toronto Humane Society has no kill policy allowing most of the dogs to find a happy ending.
Shelter staff are using the hashtags #adoptdontshop and #getyourrescueon on Twitter to promote their campaign.
