Canada has suffered a number of mass job losses, but Home Depot is hiring for 5,500 seasonal positions.

Home Depot is hiring people across Canada in all 181 stores for their busiest season of the year, spring.

Of that number, 2,600 of those positions are in Ontario.

According to Statistics Canada, the current unemployment rate in the country is almost seven per-cent.

Alicia Martin, Home Depot spokesperson and manager for talent planning and acquisition, said there are a variety of positions available at the company.

“It ranges from sales associates, to seasonal sales associates, to cashiers. We’re even looking for overnight associates as well,” said Martin.

Martin said the company provides a tuition reimbursement program for part-time employees in school.

Both full-time and part-time employees also have access to a benefits package including dental care, she told Humber News.

“Home Depot offering over 5,000 jobs is a great, hopeful opportunity for students for making money for financial struggles,” said David Torchia, a heating and air conditioning student at Humber College.

If you’re looking for a job, Humber College Career Advisor Christine Colosimo said it’s important for students to know their resume.

“The biggest challenge that people have is that they go through the motion of writing a resume, and they just do it because, they don’t necessarily do it and know exactly who they are,” said Colosimo.

Gillian Fernandopulle, Home Depot human resources staffing coordinator,  said it takes time for training as well as orientation, so hiring earlier is important.

“We like to not hire in the spring when we need people ready to go, we just like to make sure that we have everyone trained up so that they’re ready,” said Fernandopulle.
