Tweets may be only 140 characters long but the sentiment they could hold will be as timeless as the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Veteran Affairs Canada kicked off Veterans’ Week with a social media campaign to remember veterans and honour active soldiers.

This is exactly the goal of the #WhoWillYouRemember campaign launched today urging Canadians to compose heartfelt messages sharing memories and stories about all those who have served.

The campaign is a modern twist on traditional means of spreading awareness about the countless lives who have been touched by the service of a soldier.

Using social media is a way to usher in a wave of Canadians of all ages and encourage them to participate in this important Canadian tradition.

The campaign will run until Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.

Minister of Veteran Affairs Julian Fantino started the campaign with a video urging Canadians to share treasured personal memories of a veteran.

In the video below, Fantino shares a personal anecdote of his first encounter with Canadian soldiers.

They only take a few moments to construct, but  Canadians are taking to social media to compose messages paying their ultimate respects to those who have served their country proudly and bravely.

On the Veteran Affairs home page, Canadians are reminded, “They are our grandfathers, fathers, brothers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, neighbours…and heroes. Canada’s Veterans-their courage, service and sacrifices have kept us strong, proud and free.”

In this age of digital media its the easiest way to acknowledge, honour and celebrate them.
