Algo Centre Mall Collapse

By Julienne Bay

A class action lawsuit will be launched by Elliot Lake residents who suffered losses in the 2012 mall collapse. Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba approved the lawsuit this morning.

Over 300 people are seeking compensation. There are 13 defendants, including the current and former mall owners, the Province of Ontario and the City of Elliot Lake.

In January, Robert Wood, an engineer who declared the mall structurally sound just weeks before its collapse has been charged with criminal negligence.

Kevin McSheffrey, the regional managing editor of the Elliot Lake Standard said it’s up to the courts to decide who’s ultimately responsible.

“A lot of people figured there’s more than one person responsible for this,” said McSheffrey.

Here’s a timeline looking at the history of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.
