JFK Assassination Anniversary

It’s the 50th anniversary of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Kennedy was shot by sniper Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas in 1963.

Officials will lay a wreath on his grave at Arlington cemetery today.

Ford Won’t Back Down On Budget

In Rob Ford news, the mayor says he won’t back down on 2014 budget talks at city council.

In a speech at Casa Loma last night, Ford said he would fight council on the use of proposed tax hikes.

The mayor would like to cut the land transfer tax by ten percent, but with reduced powers, may not have the clout with city council.

$65 Million Lac-Megantic

Prime minister Stephen Harper has pledged an additional $95 million to clean up Lac-Megantic’s oil-contaminated ground from a train derailment in July that killed 47 people.

Cleanup is expected to take years.

Coal-free Ontario

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced the province will stop using coal power.

Former American vice-president and environmental advocate Al Gore was by her side during the announcement, which would make Ontario the first coal-free place in North America.

But the proposal still needs support from the opposition to pass.

101st Grey Cup

The 101st Grey Cup will take over Regina this weekend, with the Hamilton Tiger Cats facing the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Riders could be the third home team to clinch the CFL’s top honour in the last three seasons.
