Humber students are encouraged to use exercise to relieve stress during midterms.

A student group called Exercise is Medicine on Campus hosted a “Walk n’ Talk” event at Humber on Monday.

The group was promoting healthy lifestyle choices to combat stress of meeting deadlines and studying for exams.

Studies show positive payoffs to students choosing a healthier alternative to dealing with stress, said Fitness Co-ordinator, Leanne Henwood-Adam.

“When you exercise, your body produces endorphins which helps you feel great and feel energized,” said Henwood-Adam.

Henwood-Adam said stress weakens the immune systems and can increase a student’s likelihood to catching the flu.

Stress creates academic obstacles like sleep difficulties and anxiety, according to the American College Health Association.

Guelph-Humber student, Abby LaDouceur, who has been writing a 20-page paper worth 60 per cent of her final grade, welcomes the idea of exercise as a way to blow off some steam.

“I need a change of environment and I’ll usually go for a walk,” says LaDouceur, who’s in her fourth year Media Studies program.

Both Henwood-Adam and LaDouceur agree that a walk can replenish your energy and decrease stress levels that many students are familiar with at college.

Exercise is Medicine on Campus will house its next “Walk n’ Talk” during midterms next semester.
