A recent University of Calgary study showed teens are being exposed to less sexually-oriented material on the internet.

The study examined data from January 1999 to January 2016, mainly studying the online behaviour and unwanted exposure to sexual content of teens between ages 12 and 16 .

Unwanted sexual content exposure consisted of sexually explicit pictures or windows, pop-ups windows, spam emails, website redirects and unwanted chats to provide sexual information.

One of the main findings of this report is that teenagers are being less exposed to sexual content online despite high internet usage. This decline is also relevant to the decline in teenage pregnancies, online child sexual abuse and other risky behaviours.

Parents are helping children develop safe online habits. This is also supplemented by an increased use of safety filters to prevent such content. Better response by authorities to deal with sex-related cyber crimes is also reducing illicit practices.
