More than two years after her death, Gloria Taylor’s legal challenge is reaching its ultimate hearing.
The Supreme Court of Canada will hear arguments Oct. 15 in Carter v. Canada, the lawsuit started by the British Columbia Civil Liberties Assocation on behalf of Taylor, Kathleen Carter, for whom the case got its name, and other plaintiffs. The suit alleges Section 241(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada violates an individual’s Section 7 Charter rights, specifically the right to “life, liberty and security of person…”

Every one who aids or abets a person to commit suicide, whether suicide ensues or not, is guilty of an indictable offense and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.
