Social awareness has caused an increase in the number of rapes reported in Spain this year, following a verdict in the infamous wolf pack case.
The case drew attention to Spanish law regarding sexual assault, rape and sexual abuse. The perpetrators attacked a woman during the running of the bulls festival in Pamplona on July 7, 2016. They shared videos and messages on a WhatsApp group. A court sentenced them to nine to eleven years in prison on a lesser charge of sexual abuse instead of rape.
This case has become Spain’s #MeToo movement with the hashtag #ibelieveyou.
In recent years many countries have faced similar protests against sexual assault. Many have updated their laws to reflect changing perceptions.
