According to new studies, sea levels are rising at an alarming rate.

Robert Kopp, a climate scientist who is the lead author of a study published by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, looked back at sea levels over the past 3,000 years.

“There’s no question that the 20th century is the fastest,” Kopp told the Associated Press. “It’s because of the temperature increase in the 20th century which has been driven by fossil fuel use.”

The following chart explores the different ways that global warming is affecting sea levels.
