Toronto’s month long Pride celebrations began Wednesday May 31 with Mayor John Tory raising the rainbow and transgender flags during a lunchtime ceremony at City Hall.

Tory said it is important for Toronto to keep an open dialogue regarding LGBTQ2S issues, and to work to confront anti-black racism in Toronto.

Co-chair of Pride Toronto’s board of directors Alica Hall, who joined the mayor at the kick-off, said the plus sign is the theme of this year’s Pride. She said the symbol allows everyone to add their “intersectionality” and their “glitter.”

The 37th annual Pride festivities continue until June 25.
