Ontario Colleges’ Information Fair has big expectations

Students looking for information on post-secondary education will be interested in attending the 2015 Ontario Information Fair at Enercare Centre in Toronto next week.

Twenty-five colleges are participating, including Humber College, George Brown, Centennial, Seneca, the Michener Institute and Sheridan.

“It’s a good way for potential students to checkout what kind of programs are good,”  Lisa Pires, Seneca’s Media Relations spokesperson, said.

Recent statistics show a 0.1 per cent rise in unemployment across Canada.

However, a 2015 report by Colleges Ontario suggests that a shift in Ontario’s job-search market that puts greater emphasis on candidates having a degree, diploma or certificate from an accredited college.

The report underlines the importance of post-secondary education for young people looking for work: “College education continues to provide an effective route into the workforce as results show 84 per cent of Ontario’s most recent graduates found employment within six months of graduation.”

A recent ontariocollege.ca survey found that 98 per cent of college graduates would recommend a college to their friends or family members.

The Ontario Information Fair opens on Oct. 19 at 5 pm and will feature six colleges, including Humber College.

Other schools will set up information booths on Oct. 20. Tuesday’s event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Ontario College Information Fair’s provided a descriptive overview of the session which will include information from the difference colleges, workshops on career management, credit transfers and how interested students can apply online to colleges in Ontario.

The college information fair is sponsored by ontariocolleges.ca, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Study North and ONtranfer.ca, and its organized yearly by volunteers and Ontario colleges administration.
