One Canadian was killed and three others injured as a result of a bus crash in Mexico.
The bus carried 31 people who were on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that arrived Tuesday in the port of Costa Maya, Mexico.
The 12 dead include at least one child and citizens from the United States, Italy, Sweden and Brazil, according to the state government of Mexico. A local driver and tour guides were also on the trip.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with those affected by the bus crash in Mexico,” said Philip Hannan, spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada. “Consular officials in Ottawa and Playa del Carmen, Mexico are in contact with affected Canadian citizens as well as family members and are providing consular assistance as required.”
The department could not provide further information regarding how many Canadians were on the bus and if they were killed or injured.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. Passengers on similar tourist buses passing by the route claim there were no signs of another vehicle being involved in the crash.

The bus is said to have overturned on a narrow, two-lane road with no guardrail which is on the highway in southeastern Mexico between Mahahual and Cafetal in Quintana Roo state.

The tragedy is one of the worst accidents in Mexico in almost 30 years according to Mexican correspondents.
