There were coloured lights, henna art, and sweet and savory foods along with traditional music as Humber College celebrated Diwali on Thursday.

The holiday, which runs from Oct. 30-Nov. 4 this year, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.

Each year the holiday ends by celebrating the conquest of good over evil.

Diwali is one of the most celebrated traditions in the world, spanning over five days.

The celebration consists of henna art, exchanging sweets, lighting of candles and shooting off fireworks.

Tanesha Douglas, one of the organizers for Happy Diwali and a third year University of Guelph-Humber student, told Humber News the event has been in planning since September.

“We’ve been doing this event since September,” said Douglas. “Meeting every week and researching what Diwali is.”

Douglas said one of the main goals of the event is to bring all Humber students together.

“We just want to get people to know, when they’re coming to school, they are coming to a second home. Gives people an opportunity to come together.”
