Humber women’s volleyball team has now won two pre-season tournaments after taking the Niagara College Invitational volleyball tournament by beating the Georgian Grizzlies by a 3-0 margin on Sunday.

The team won all the games they played this weekend against Geogian, Niagara and Canadore with tough competition coming from Georgian and Niagara.

The team coach, Chris Wilkins told Humber News, “I really like this group of girls we have got. They really get it and understand it and get the bigger picture. And you know what they really enjoy being around each other.”

One of the players, Alley Newman of the Kinesiology and Health Promotion program, said, “As a team I am happy with our performance. I feel we could do a little better at just kind of talking out there and working together.”

Both the coach and assistant coach said the team has to work on itself before the next tournament, the Humber Cup, is played at home.

Wilkins said, “I think we need to get better defensively, and playing at our pace and our level. Sometimes we kind of fall asleep a little bit out there and we really have to find ways to keep ourselves involved in the game.”

Assistant coach, Dean Wylie told Humber News, “Team needs to improve on consistency. Our serving is starting to come together. We are ending a lot of our own rallies. I would rather have the other teams make us end rallies. I would like to see consistency on our serving.”

Wylie explained such tournaments help the team prepare for the season coming up in early November.

“That’s why we come to these tournaments, to get ready. Rolling line – ups to find who is going to play the best together. Its not necessarily the best players, it’s the team- the six people on the court playing the best together – that’s going to be the starting line-up.

Next weekend the team competes against Cambrian, Trent, Durham and Loyalist at Humber College.
