Humber staff and students raised money for breast cancer awareness on Tuesday, with a three on three co-ed basketball tournament.
Competing teams paid $15 for the opportunity to compete for Humber swag, like sweaters, mugs and more.
“We also have a dunk contest going on after the tournament. All the donations and proceeds will go straight to the Breast Cancer Society,” Maria Sportelli, second year student in the recreation and leisure services program, told Humber News.
A raffle was also held with a Sony Blu-ray player as the big prize. The event was put on by Humber’s recreation and leisure services program, wherein students learn things like special event management and facility operations.
“It’s very hectic since we’re all first time event runners. We’re kind of all over the place and it’s very stressful,” said Sportelli.

Jennifer Bennett, an instructor in the recreation and leisure program, told Humber News the whole purpose of the event and the class was to teach students how to plan and stage an event.
“It’s been a really great experience. But it’s been very stressful. Their blood’s been boiling. Yesterday morning they had three teams and they’ve worked really hard. Today they have eight teams, so they’ve really seen first hand what it’s like,” said Bennett.
Alan Contreras, another member of the recreation and leisure program. told Humber News the lead into the event was a lot of work, but that things worked out in the end.
“It was stressful – the anticipation for the event, and the fact that we had teams coming in last minute. But now I think things seem to be going pretty smoothly and I think people are enjoying it. We’re looking forward to it being a success and for participants to have fun, which is the most important thing.”
