The Humber men’s soccer team continued their chase for first place in the OCAA west division with a 4-0 demolition of the Redeemer Royals late Wednesday.

The officials were the talk of the game, as a number of questionable calls and non-calls were made.

A late tackle by Redeemer midfielder Justin deSchiffert on Humber’s Sergio Marin in the second half prematurely ended the forward’s night due to injury. The subsequent yellow card prompted howls of disgust from the Humber sidelines, where the offence was seen as an obvious red card

Humber head coach Germain Sanchez was more muted in his reaction, but agreed he was unhappy with the officiating.

“He didn’t do very well,” said Sanchez. “I think he lacked the experience.”

The Hawks stumbled out of the gate and struggled to create quality goal scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the match.

They would eventually open the scoring late in the first half as veteran forward Matthew Rios scored inside the goal area to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Humber came out flying in the second half and added another goal off a corner kick when first year defender Kingsley Boasiako scored his first goal as a Hawk.

Humber would add two more goals, courtesy of striker Daniel Braga, as the Hawks rounded out the 4-0 win.

Hawk midfielder Roberto Galle, who also plays for the Toronto F.C. Academy, said there was room for improvement but he was satisfied with the team’s overall performance.

“We had a slow start but we got our touches going and we found a way to get some goals.”

Humber midfielder Yousif Yousif agreed.

“We did pretty well, we moved the ball very well which was important.”

The Hawks play their next game Saturday at home against the Niagara College Knights at 3:00 p.m.
