Thanksgiving is right around the corner and many food banks are operating full time to get food to those in need.

At Humber College, the early childhood organization education (ECE) student council is running a week-long food drive that goes on until the start of Thanksgiving weekend.

The food bank, run by students enrolled in the ECE program, started collecting donations on Oct. 6 and will conclude on Friday.

Julie Valerio, ECE professor at Humber and faculty adviser for the food bank, said the group chose to do a food drive in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

“It’s the time for harvest and thanks… so that all of the Humber community would be able to become more aware of giving to others and in helping families and children in need,” she said.

Valerio added the team initially planned on sending the food to the Humber Student Federation (HSF) but were told that HSF no longer takes the food.

The group is now looking at donating the food to community organizations. The Food Bank, Daily Bread Food Bank and Elizabeth Fry are three of their top choices. As for goals, Valerio said, “10 baskets of food – like 250 pounds – that’s what we are trying to aim for. That’s our goal, but any amount is good.”

Many students, such as Angelo Juarez, a first-year massage therapy student, is among those donating non-perishable food products.

“I knew I had canned food at home and when I heard about the drive I was like, ‘Why not?,’” said Juarez.

The food will be donated on Friday once an organization has been picked by the council, said Valerio. Food can be donated to room M200 the School of Health Sciences until Friday.

The Food Bank stated on its website that about 850,000 Canadians are helped by food banks across the country.
