Tyson Villeneuve, second-year tourism and travel management student, and Tracy Zhu, second-year events planning student, enjoy serving Gourmet Express’ homemade ice cream.

Gourmet Express served up free scoops of delicious homemade ice cream today, made by Humber’s own baking and pastry students.

Students lined up for servings of the delicacy from all over campus.

“There’s not enough reasonably priced healthy meals on campus. We give students a price range and variety,” said Savio Colaco, business manager of the School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism.

Colaco pointed to the Eat Well boxes that are part of a new line of healthy eats to help students feel less stressed about their personal wellness.

The ice cream is also available in store for about six dollars for half a litre.

“Just because you eat ice cream does not mean you are unhealthy. These ice creams are homemade and have no preservatives,” said Colaco.

Gourmet Express has a new marketing plan complete with a new look and branding tactic.

The free ice cream was part of an initiative to invite students to be proactive and engage in healthier dietary choices, made on campus by students just like them.

It is important to keep things new and “change is good,” said Kellie Elliot, operational coordinator at Gourmet Express.

The focus of Gourmet Express is to provide student-made food and work experience to the culinary students.

“Our goal is not to compete with the other locations. We want to do our own thing but keep it fresh,” said Elliot.

“I think (about half) of students care about health. There is a new type of millennial student who is into eating healthy and taking care of themselves,” said Elliot.
