Things are looking up for marijuana users in Canada, as the Minister of Health has announced that federal legislation to legalize use of the drug will be introduced next spring.
Jane Philpott told delegates at a UN assembly in New York Thursday that the new effort will be to stop the drug and its profits from falling into the wrong hands.
“We will introduce legislation in spring 2017 that ensures we keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals,” Philpott said in her speech.
The Minister also said that previous measures to stop drug-related crime have been ineffective.
“We know it is impossible to arrest our way out of this problem,” said Philpott.
“We will work with law enforcement partners to encourage appropriate and proportionate criminal justice measures.”
