Humber Lakeshore campus will open its doors May 26 to showcase some of the unique buildings through cinematic history.
“There been a lot of film shootings in campus since the 1970s till up to date and some of the best-known movies that were part of Humber’s cinematic histories are the movies like Police Academy, Suicide Squad, Urban Legend and Strange Brew,” said Jennifer Bazar, who is curator at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre.
Humber’s place in film history is part of Doors Open Toronto, which will feature historic cinemas’ sites all around the Greater Toronto Area.
“Doors Open Toronto is an event which is organized across the city at among the different sites and Humber College Lakeshore campus is one of the sites that is part of this event,” Bazar said. “The fun this year is that they put a theme, which is about the movies and television shows that were shot across the GTA.”
“We are doing a self-guided tour of the locations at a campus, which will feature cottages and underground tunnels along with Toronto’s Assembly Hall, where some of the famous movies and TV shows were filmed,” she said.
Bazar said the idea of this event is to give a public access to places that don’t generally have the access and to focus on the unique architecture of some of the different and interesting sites across the city.
At Lakeshore, two movies were in part film in the underground tunnels at the old psychiatric hospital which are now a series of cottages which comprise the campus’ buildings.
“Suicide Squad is the movie which was filmed in the underground tunnels in 2016, and Urban Legend used the grounds in 1998,” she said. “We will open these older sections of the underground tunnels, where we will have the entire exhibition set up with all the photos from all these different movies and shows.”
Humber spokesperson Emily Milic said the tour is self-guided tour and the maps will be provided to the people.
“Visitors will be provided with the guided maps known as ‘The Map to the Stars,’ which will have all the stations (cottages) mapped on it,” Bazar said. “The maps will provide the background information of each station and people can choose their priority according to it.”
