A couple cups of coffee a day can actually keep the doctor away and could lead to longer life, according to a new study by Harvard University’s School of Public Health.

The study, published online in the journal Circulation, on Monday said people who drink coffee daily, even up to five cups per day, are less likely to die from heart disease, neurological disease, Type 2 diabetes or suicide.

The researchers analyzed health data gathered from participants in three massive ongoing studies: Nurses Health Study, Nurses Health Study 2 and Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

For about 30 years the participants were given food questionnaires every four years to evaluate coffee drinking. During the study time period 19,524 women and 12,432 men died from a variety of causes.

The study took into consideration potential factors such as smoking, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol consumption and dietary circumstances. Coffee Consumption reduced overall risk by 9-15 per cent.
