Pieces of a yellow motorcycle and flowers mark the intersection where Garfield Turner, 30, of Brampton, died in a motorcycle accident, early Wednesday morning.
The cheerleading community grieves the loss of one of their own.
Turner’s yellow Yamaha motorcycle collided with a Ford SUV at Queen Street East and Delta Park Boulevard near Airport Road.
Turner was a cheerleading coach and member of the Power Cheer Toronto Cobra Club for the last five years, where he started off as a competitor and began coaching last season.
Denzel Andrew, 20, one of Turner’s teammates, a first year advertising student at Humber College, says Turner was always motivating the people around him. “He was like a big brother to me and really wise, “ says Andrew.
Andrew says, “Every day was a happy day to him, that’s what made his character so special.”
Even though Turner was not a Humber College Student, he was a huge supporter of the Humber Hawks cheerleading team. “He would dress up in Humber Hawk colours and come to games to cheer on his friends,” says Andrew.
An OPP study says by the end of August, the Canadian motorcycle death toll hit a seven-year high with 26 fatalities.
